Background
a new way to run events

Watchpoint: Gibraltar/Overwatch Events has always been a place to track and compiling fan events for the fandom, but we're trying to turn ourselves into an actual community that can host events, too.

The advantages of having events hosted on our community:

  • For those who organise them
    • No need to create a new sideblog/to clog up your own personal blog: post directly in our community
    • No sorting through tags: when the time comes, the content gets shared directly under the post by the users joining the event.
    • No need to promote it: ovwevents' audience is your audience; every announcement is done through our twitter
    • If you don't have an account, you don't have to make one: click here for more info
    • If you want to stay anonymous, you can: click here for more info
  • For those who participate:
    • You don't need an account on DW: you can just post a link to your content in the replies
    • You can stay anonymous: reply anonymously with your content
  • For those who cross-post:
    • Advertisement: we're gonna promote your event on our channels
    • More participants: if you opt not to disable comments, you might have more participants (anonymous, too) and an easier time finding content for your event.
The reasoning behind it (optional read) On tumblr, preparing an event means opening a sideblog to host it, picking a time of the year to run it, and offering seven prompts to the fandom to fill; when the time comes, the ones joining the event post their content on tumblr with the appropriate tag, and the moderators manually reblog/queue them. Unfortunately the fandom is big and tags on tumblr don't always work as they should, and many works are often left un-shared because of technical problems and human mistakes.

When tumblr made itself unsafe for 18+ content makers and we decided to move to dreamwidth, we started to wonder about the potentiality of this new platform, and we came up with a new kind of ship/week event.

Using our community as a location, everyone could organise an event: it's just a matter of coming up with a few prompts, picking a time of the year, write a post and submit it. No need to hunt the content down where the time comes: those joining the event leave a reply to the post with a link to their content on their favored platform, or even their content directly, in anonymous form if they wish.

We aim to be a central hub for all those content creators and consumers who wish for a more organised and centralised fandom experience, and we hope you all want to be part of that.

Instructions
how to post/cross-post

If you don't have a dreamwidth account or you don't want to disclose your identity: go to this post.

If you have an account on dreamwidth:

  1. Make sure you joined the community. If you didn't, click on 'join this community' in the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  2. Click on 'Post to community' to open the post editor.
  3. Write the post for your event.
    • Specify at least the pairing/character, the dates, the prompts.
    • The entry title needs to contain the pairing, the type of event, the date (ie, Reapzo Week Summer Edition || 02-08 jul. Please note the format of the date)
    • If you're cross-posting, link back to your own platform. If you want, you can disable the comments through the droplist below the editor.
    • If the post is too long or NSFW, please put it below a cut. If you don't know how to use a cut on dreamwidth, read this post.
    • If the event is NSFW/18+ mark the appropriate age restriction in the droplist below the editor.
    • Remember to tag the event appropriately (ie. mission:week, pairing:hanzo/zarya). You can see all the tags here. If there's no tag for your pairing, request it through our askbox.
  4. When you click 'Post to: overwatchevents', the entry gets queued for admin evaluation.

Please allow a few days to pass, to let the admins do their job. If corrections are needed, you'll receive a notification to fix your post, and then you can try to submit again. Otherwise, your entry will be posted to the community, and your event advertised through twitter and our masterlist.

Notes
other rules and reminders

[1] this is a ship-inclusive space. You can organise events about any ship and character you want, as long as the appropriate warnings are in place.
[2] we allow 18+ content. You can organise events focused on explicit content or that allow explicit content, as long as the appropriate warnings are in place.
[3] Like in the past, no anti behaviour will be tolerated. It means that you can't exclude people from joining your event because you know they ship that pairing you find gross. On the other hand, we accept events that have ship-restrictions in their rules (ie, 'you can't submit x-ship for this event, but the fact that you ship x-ship doesn't influence your participation status).
[4] We currently accept original submissions for ship/character week events only. You can cross-post every other type of event. This is because we're still new at this and we need to figure out how to run ship/character week events, before we can deal with more complex events. Sorry for the inconvenience.
